Sedation Dentistry in Springfield, IL

More commonly known as laughing gas, this safe, hypo-allergenic option offers no side effects and is easy to administer. Nitrous oxide is an effective sedation method in sedation dentistry for both adults and children.

Sedation Dentistry

The Origins of “Laughing Gas”

Laughing gas got its comical name from the effect it has on patient’s once the mixture is inhaled. The anesthetizing gases dull pain by working in the central nervous system. This puts patient’s in a euphoric state which can result in mild hysteria. Although some people may find this behavior odd, laughing gas is completely harmless.

How does nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) work?

We administer nitrous oxide through a mask that is attached to a device and placed on the face. Nitrogen and oxygen are combined in the machine and the mixture of gases gets inhaled through the mask. The effects of this dental sedation can be felt within minutes of breathing in the laughing gas.

When the dentist has completed the procedure, the combined gases are replaced with pure oxygen. After the treatment is finished, the effects of the dental sedation subside with normal breathing.

Reasons for Sedation Dentistry in Springfield, IL

Nitrous oxide is our preferred choice of conscious sedation for several reasons, including:

  • Nitrous oxide works well for young children.
  • The dental sedation helps patients feel more comfortable by eliminating dental anxiety and the fear of injectable anesthesia.
  • Laughing gas eases feelings of anxiety.
  • Nitrous oxide provides light sedation, so patients do not lose consciousness.

  • Saliva flow and the gag reflex are both decreased while the patient is under nitrous oxide sedation.
