Dental fillings are not only used to repair cavities, they also restore teeth that are cracked, broken or worn down from nail biting, night-time grinding or other damaging habits. We refer to these materials as fillings because they “fill-in” a portion of the tooth that your dentist has removed due to decay or injury with either a tooth-colored or metallic material. At Schön Dental in Springfield, IL, we offer both white fillings and silver amalgam fillings.
We offer both white fillings and the more traditional silver amalgam fillings. Selecting one often comes down to personal choice. For obvious reasons, most of our patients prefer white ceramic fillings over traditional amalgam fillings because they blend in with the color of natural teeth. While both options are good solutions for repairing decayed teeth, ceramic dental fillings do have some unique advantages:
- A tooth-colored ceramic is virtually invisible. Your damaged tooth may appear unscathed once the filling is placed.
- White fillings prevent tooth graying. Metal amalgam may shine through translucent enamel. All types of dental filling material will eventually weaken teeth, but white ceramic does not expand like amalgam fillings do, therefore, it is less likely to cause tooth cracks over time.
You may be wondering, what’s the difference? The silver amalgam fillings you grew up with are still an effective choice and more affordable. Sometimes referred to as metal fillings, amalgam is a combination of metals which include mercury, tin, copper, and silver. Long-lasting and trusted by dentists, amalgam is strong and very durable. It just happens to lack the cosmetic appeal of ceramic fillings.
